For years people have mistakenly believed that their coat closets have one purpose and one purpose only: to store coats that were not being used. However, thanks to the ingenuity and creativity of modern homeowners people today are finding that these small spaces have much more practical uses.

If you no longer need your coat closet or you simply want to transform the space, then consider giving your coat closet a makeover. Here are a few ideas to help you get started:

Turn Your Coat Closet Into a Mud Room

By taking off the doors to the closet and renovating the interior space you can open up the room and transform your closet into a more practical space for you and your family. In addition to removing the closet doors, you also can add a bench for seating in the closet as well as a few hooks to hang coats, bags or purses. Some people opt to install shelving inside the closet in order to preserve storage while still achieving a new look. If you do not have a mudroom in your home this is an excellent way to repurpose your existing coat closet.

Transform Your Coat Closet Into a Reading Nook

If you feel as if you are constantly searching for someplace quiet and private to go in your own home, then you may want to get rid of your coat closet and instead make that tiny space into a reading nook. You can remove the doors to the closet and install a bench which will allow you to cuddle up with your new favorite book. You may even be able to install soft lighting to make it easier to read in the space, or add a soft curtain where the door once was in order to enhance the peaceful atmosphere of your new nook.

Create a Virtual Learning Space Out of Your Coat Closet

Students of all ages have discovered both the joys and frustrations of virtual learning. If you have a virtual learner in your home who has to be on Zoom meetings on and off throughout the day then you may need a quiet and private space for them to study. An old coat closet that is no longer being used is the perfect spot to add a desk and some shelves. This will allow your student to stay organized and focused as they take on their digital learning tasks each day.

Convert Your Coat Closet into a Micro Office

Whether you are working from home temporarily or you are a permanent remote worker, then you will need a functional yet comfortable place to do your job. Rather than letting a coat closet go to waste, you can remove the doors and design an innovative micro office for yourself. You can build a desk into the closet and also use wire baskets and other hardware to make it a more functional office space. When you are working from home it's great to have a place where you can complete your work and then leave when you are done for the day.

Traditionally, closets have always been reserved for storage in the home. When you think outside the box you can transform these small areas into functional spaces that are more useful to you. This simple change can have a lasting impact on your daily life.
